The Florence area is probably best known for the massive sand dunes that rim the southern edge of the city and extend south 40 miles between Florence and Coos Bay, Oregon. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area contains some of the largest oceanfront dunes in the world, some up to 500 feet high and forming banks up to three miles deep. It’s the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in the U.S. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the dunes from dune buggy rides to sand boarding at Sand Master Park.
But, there’s so much more to discover in and around the city. You’ll find plenty of hiking, bird watching and horseback riding. Other popular recreational activities include fishing, swimming and boating in the 17 lakes around Florence. Crabbing, clamming, ocean and river fishing are available as well.
You won’t want to miss the jet boat trips available up the Siuslaw River during the summer months. And for a more leisurely pace, there’s the Westward Ho!, an old fashioned sternwheeler, which takes visitors on excursions and dinner cruises on the Siuslaw River.
Florence's tastefully restored Old Town offers interesting shops and boutiques, coffee houses and good restaurants. South of town, the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum has exhibits of pioneer items such as kitchen and lumbering artifacts.
