The Oregon Dunes

It’s Like Being on Another Planet.

The wind-sculpted sand dunes of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area tower 500 feet above sea level. The miles and miles of sand are amazing, but among the open dunes, you’ll also find thick “tree islands,” marsh-like deflation plains and beaches. And this area provides a myriad of recreational opportunities from off-highway vehicle use to hiking, photography, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and camping.

Even water sports are available throughout the Oregon Dunes. There are more than 30 lakes and ponds scattered throughout and numerous streams to choose from. You can enjoy sailing, canoeing, water-skiing, swimming, scuba diving and fishing. The large lakes include:

  • Woahink
  • Siltcoos
  • Tahkenitch
  • Eel
  • North and South Tenmile Lakes

Click here for more information on all these lakes.

Hiking is a favorite activity in the Oregon Dunes as well. Depending upon the trail, you’ll find yourself in the quiet solitude of coastal forests that extend nearly to the ocean. Many trails weave through Douglas-fir and Sitka spruce. At times you’ll be trekking over vast expanses of sand that eventually lead to low lying wetlands or a hidden lake at the bottom of a dune.

When you plan a getaway to Florence and the Oregon Dunes, you’ll want to stay at Driftwood Shores Resort and Conference Center. It’s the only oceanfront hotel in the Florence area for miles … north or south. Reserve your room online or call 800-422-5091.
